Our restaurant, founded in Fukuoka in 1988, created Fukuoka-style Sri Lankan Curry
It's an original curry style different from the curries traditionally eaten in Sri Lanka, yet it has become established as a new local Fukuoka gourmet dish: Kyushu Lanka Curry.
Do you know what kind of dishes the curries traditionally eaten in Sri Lanka are?
In Sri Lanka, there's a traditional culture of eating with your hands, not with spoons or chopsticks.
Therefore, hot, soupy dishes are not usually eaten.
Rice or noodles similar to steamed vermicelli called "hoppers" are served with several types of dry curries, featuring colorful vegetables, chicken, and fish, laid out in small portions on the table. When eating, people freely scoop various curries onto their plates in a buffet style and mix them together. This is the style of curry eaten by locals in Sri Lanka.
When our restaurant was founded in Fukuoka in 1988, there were almost no ethnic restaurants in Fukuoka, and absolutely no establishments serving Sri Lankan cuisine.
Also, at that time, Japanese people strongly perceived curry as "a dish where curry sauce is served with rice on a single plate." To make it more acceptable to Japanese palates, yet incorporate the local style of serving multiple types of curry, our unique style was perfected: rice or noodles in the center of a large plate, surrounded by several types of soupy curries served "aigake" style (mixed together). This style has continued to this day.
Although it's called Sri Lankan Curry, such a curry doesn't exist in actual Sri Lanka.
It was definitely conceived and made by a Sri Lankan chef, but since it's our restaurant's original dish, such a curry, of course, didn't exist in other Sri Lankan restaurants.
Subsequently, as our restaurant continued to serve this Sri Lankan curry in Fukuoka for over 30 years, staff who left our establishment to open their own curry restaurants, and other establishments influenced by our curry, began to increase, particularly in Kyushu, offering soupy, aigake-style Sri Lankan curries similar to ours.
About ten years ago, curry enthusiasts and researchers from regions like Kanto and Kansai, who travel nationwide and are knowledgeable about authentic Sri Lankan curry, started saying, "Fukuoka's Sri Lankan curry is strange. They serve curry I've never seen before." Conversely, people who grew up in Fukuoka and then moved out of the prefecture would say, "There are Sri Lankan restaurants in Tokyo and Osaka, but they don't have the same tasting curry."
Despite being called Sri Lankan curry, this taste, unique to the Fukuoka area, has recently become recognized as a genre of curry called "Fukuoka-style Sri Lankan Curry" or "Kyushu Lanka" among food connoisseurs and curry fans, and is gradually gaining recognition among the general public as one of Fukuoka City's new local gourmet dishes.
Although it has a history of nearly 40 years, Kyushu Lanka Curry has just modestly taken its place among Hakata's gourmet specialties, such as Hakata Ramen, Mizutaki, Motsunabe, and Mentaiko.
Its deliciousness, nurtured and continually enjoyed by the discerning foodies of Fukuoka, is authentic.
Please try it in our restaurant, by mail order, or as takeout.
