Our restaurant, founded in Fukuoka in 1988, created Fukuoka-style Sri Lankan curry.
Although it is an original style of curry different from those eaten in Sri Lanka, it has become rooted as a new local delicacy in Fukuoka City: Kyushu Lanka Curry.
Do you know what kind of dishes are typically eaten in Sri Lanka?
In Sri Lanka, there's a traditional custom of eating with your hands, without using spoons or chopsticks. Therefore, hot, soupy dishes are not commonly eaten.
Instead, several types of non-soupy curries, featuring rice or noodles like steamed vermicelli called hoppers, and colorful vegetables, chicken, or fish, are served in small portions on the table. When eating, people freely serve themselves from this buffet-style spread, mixing multiple types of curry to eat. This is the style of curry eaten by locals in Sri Lanka.
When our restaurant was founded in Fukuoka in 1988, there were very few ethnic restaurants in Fukuoka, and no restaurants served Sri Lankan cuisine.
At that time, Japanese people strongly associated curry with "a dish where curry sauce is served with rice on a single plate." To make it more acceptable to Japanese palates, we adopted a style of serving multiple curries but in our unique way: rice or noodles in the center of a large plate, surrounded by several types of soupy curries served together. This style has continued to this day.
Although it is called Sri Lankan curry, such a curry does not exist in Sri Lanka. While it is undoubtedly a dish conceived and prepared by a Sri Lankan chef, it is our original creation, so, of course, no other Sri Lankan restaurant offered such a curry.
Subsequently, as our restaurant continued to offer this Sri Lankan curry in Fukuoka City for over 30 years, staff who left our restaurant opened their own curry shops. Also, influenced by our curry, more restaurants, mainly in Kyushu, began offering our style of soupy, mixed Sri Lankan curry.
About a decade ago, curry enthusiasts and researchers from Kanto and Kansai, who travel across the country and are well-versed in authentic Sri Lankan curry, started rumors like, "Fukuoka's Sri Lankan curry is strange. They serve curry I've never seen before." Conversely, people who grew up in Fukuoka and then moved out of the prefecture would say, "There are Sri Lankan restaurants in Tokyo and Osaka, but they don't have the same taste."
Despite being called Sri Lankan curry, this flavor, unique to the Fukuoka City area, has recently become recognized by gourmets and curry fans as a genre of curry called "Fukuoka-style Sri Lankan Curry" or "Kyushu Lanka," and is gradually becoming known to the general public as one of Fukuoka City's new local delicacies.
Despite its nearly 40-year history, Kyushu Lanka Curry has only recently taken its modest place among Hakata's gourmet specialties, represented by Hakata ramen, mizutaki, motsunabe, and mentaiko.
The deliciousness, cultivated and cherished by the food-loving citizens of Fukuoka, is authentic. Please try it at our restaurant, order it online, or get it for takeout.
